The annual Beartooth Events Nordic Ski Festival will take place Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Red Lodge Nordic Center. The center is located on Aspen Ridge Ranch in Red Lodge, Montana, just northeast of Yellowstone National Park.
Events will include five km and 10 km classic and skate races, snowshoe races and a full-moon cross country ski evening.
The 15 km Nordic center is operated by the Beartooth Recreational Trails Association, which will offer ski lessons and clinics during the day.
For non-skiers, the day and evening events will include sleigh rides, bonfires, a barbeque and snow-related activities for the kids including snow angel and snowman building contests.
For the true adventurer, there will be a limited opportunity to spend the night in an ice-block igloo, weather permitting. The igloo is located on the Nordic center and will be available on February 27 and throughout the winter. Two brave souls will be provided with thermal sleeping bags, lanterns, flashlights, Thermoses filled with hot beverages, an outhouse and hot breakfast at the Aspen Ridge Ranch House.
If a bathroom and comfortable bed are more your style, Red Lodge offers more luxurious accommodations with more than a dozen hotels and motels in the area. For a two-day getaway, add a day of downhill skiing at nearby Red Lodge Mountain. Sylvan Peak in Red Lodge rents cross country ski equipment and snowshoes, and Red Lodge Mountain has downhill skis available for rent.
Aspen Ridge Ranch is a sustainable development about three miles from the town of Red Lodge, with just 10 lots on 250 acres. Each lot owner also owns a share of the entire property, including the trails, irrigated hay fields, water features, all open land and the equine center. The BRTA is a non-profit organization formed to promote non-motorized trails in and around Red Lodge.
