THE FINE ART OF SKIING
a celebration of art and nordic skiing

Cross Country Skier is pleased to present the second annual Fine Art of Skiing a collection of Nordic skiing artwork from around the country and the world. The artwork presented here represents a diverse range of styles. We hope you find it interesting, amusing and engaging. We also encourage you to contact the artists with your feedback. If you know of other artists, please let us know or suggest that they contact us about including their work in future editions of The Fine Art of Skiing. Enjoy

Jeriann Sabin

Jeriann Sabin works from her home in Blackfoot, located in a Southeast Idaho valley not far from the world famous Teton Mountains and the Sawtooths Mountains. She is fortunate to be able to enjoy other cross country terrain closer to home including the Idaho State University yurt system and Harriman State Park, just a short distance from Yellowstone National Park. Her work has been shown regionally and nationally with private sales as far a field as South Africa, Germany and England. She and her husband devote the spring and summer to growing cut flowers, which they sell in the resort areas in Jackson, Wyoming and Sun Valley, Idaho.

Laurie Fry
Laurie Fry grew up in rural Pennsylvania. As a child she spent many happy hours roaming the woods and wondering at its beauty. She studied art at Mansfield University for two years, before moving to the state of Washington. Fry finished her studies at Central Washington University receiving a B.A. in Fine Art.

Now making her home in Winthrop, Washington, Laurie still spends many hours roaming the Cascade Mountains and surrounding Methow Valley in search of beauty and inspiration as she pursues her career as an artist. She has exhibited her work in several North Central Washington galleries and her paintings have found homes throughout the world.

I am mesmerized by the spirit of nature and try to capture what I see and feel moments that attract my soul. Enjoying the spontaneity of both watercolor and pastel as mediums, I paint the landscape as it changes by the season, the day, the moment. Nature has taught me much about color, light, composition about beauty.

Laurie is also a fully certified Nordic ski instructor, teaching for the Methow Valley Ski School for the past 12 years. She enjoys all forms of skiing including alpine, backcountry and just plain skiing from the house. I love the fact that I can combine my passion for being outdoors with both of my professions in order to make a living. It’s a tough life here in the Methow, I have to paint all summer and ski all winter!

Dieter Raoul Sauer
In conjunction with the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City, the publishing firm of Dieter Raoul Sauer released a major collection of rare vintage Olympic Winter Games poster reproductions. The lithographed posters are entirely hand printed, one color and one sheet at a time, on an old German litho press using 320 grain Coventry Rag (100% cotton) Vellum paper. St. Croix et Les Rasses (below) is one of the most spectacular Art Deco ski posters. It was designed in 1922 by an obscure Swiss artist only his initials, H.R., are known. The other three posters are offset-printed in Italy reproducing early (and scarce) ski posters by diverse Italian artists.

Michael Pohlman
The images we encounter as we ski through the winter landscape are brief and fleeting. Some are indelibly etched into memories, while others are replaced as soon as we crest the next hill or round the next corner. We are fortunate, however, to have talented individuals in the ski community who are capable preserving these memories and images in tangible, enduring media.

After graduating from college with degrees in Physical Education, History and Art, Michael Pohlman produced sports-related art commissions for several years before turning to teaching and coaching. As Curriculum Director of Physical Education at Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, Pohlman added cross country skiing to an Outdoor Adventure Class. It became an instant success. Over 2,000 students learned the basics of skiing over the 15 years he taught the class. Skiing has been instrumental in maintaining his fitness, bonding with his sons and enjoying leisure time with his family and friends during the Midwest winters. He is now a Resident Artist at the Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights.
