Lone Mountain Ranch
Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky is perched on the border of Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the most highly acclaimed cross country ski destinations in the country. More than a dude ranch for cross country skiers, Lone Mountain takes the sport very seriously and offers up a skiing experience par none. Its 80-kilometer trail system is the envy of many, traversing lodgepole pine lined mountainsides with frequent vistas of Lone Mountain and Big Sky Ski Area.
Positioned as an upscale destination, but with a local Nordic center flavor, Lone Mountain offers comfortable cabins and a well appointed lodge/dining room. A highlight, not-to-be-missed experience is a sleigh ride dinner at the North Fork Cabin. Board a 12-person sleigh pulled by two handsome Belgian draft horses for a 20-minute ride up the mountain. Pick up a bottle of your favorite libation first, as there is no bar at the cabin. The rustic cabin is fully equipped for cooking, though, where a family-style prime rib dinner is served, complete with killer cheesecake to close.

But probably the biggest news coming out of Big Sky of late is that Lone Mountain Ranch will become part of Everlands , a member-owned equity club comprising a collection of several stunning natural places, such as Castle Hot Springs in Arizona and The Point in the Adirondacks. Members will ultimately own 45 destinations around the globe. Everlands is strongly committed to conservation, and creators and sponsors of the Guggenheim Conservation Prize, which awards a large monetary prize each year to individuals who've made significant contributions to conservation. Everlands has partnered with many of the world's leading conservation groups in this regard.
The Ranch will be one of Everlands' most prized assets and, for the time being, will continue to operate as usual. In fact, the entire staff has been retained and guests will continue to enjoy the tireless devotion to their needs and the camaraderie they have come to expect at Lone Mountain. Everlands will continue to safeguard and maintain the extensive cross country ski trails at Lone Mountain Ranch and encourage their use by Ranch guests and the general public.
Commenting on the sale, Lone Mountain Ranch principal, Bob Schlap, said, “In Everlands, we have a partner that will preserve the rich heritage of Lone Mountain Ranch for many generations to come. The Ranch is a cherished part of all of our lives, and we are putting it in good hands.”
