Thank the glaciers for plentiful skiing options. That area of Maine called “down east” covers the state’s coastline from northeast of Portland all the way to Canada. The region boasts one of the longest trails in the country in the Down East Sunrise Trail (DEST). Skiers will find numerous scenic vistas on the 87-mile corridor that stretches from east of Ellsworth to Ayers Junction, just a few miles from Calais.
